Low-carb diets. Effective or not?

Some of the diets which presuppose low carbohydrate intake, such as the Atkins diet, are very popular nowadays. Dieters think that such diets help to lose weight. In fact, almost any diet will be effective if you keep it together with going in for sports or taking weight loss pills.

It is well-known that carbohydrates provide a body with energy. If the provided energy isn't spent it turns into fat. So if you give up fatty food and start eating carb food you can't be sure about losing weight. If you get less fat without spending energy provided by the carbs you have taken you can hardly lose much weight. For this reason low-carb diets are so popular among those who strive to lose weight.

Low-carb diets have the following effects on your body:

  • you get fewer calories

Most low-carbohydrate diets presuppose lots of limitations in food intake. As a rule, being on such a diet you can't have potatoes, pasta, bread, sweets and other sugary food and even some sweet fruit. Normally, this kind of food makes at least a half of your daily intake. If this kind of food is limited your calorie intake is also decreased.

  • you lose weight

  • you lose water weight

When your carb intake is reduced your body burns glycogen. It contains lots of water. When glycogen is burned water is brought out of your body and you weight is decreased.

  • you don't feel hungry so often

If carbohydrate intake is limited it is usually compensated by increased intake of fat. It takes more time for fat food to be digested. That's why you don't feel hungry for a longer period of time.

In spite of all the benefits of low-carb diets you should keep in mind that their long-term risks haven't been estimated yet. It's better not make such radical diets aimed at weight loss your permanent lifestyle. Almost any kind of weight loss diet presupposes food variety limitations. It can lead to the limited vitamin and nutrient intake. So be moderate and reasonable when you choose a diet especially if you want it to become a part of your new healthy and slim life.
